Importance of Education: A Holistic View of the First-Year Student

Join us for a day of education and training...

The fourth annual Utah First-Year Experience Consortium will take place on March 4, 2019, at the University of Utah — A. Ray Olpin Student Union.

As educators who work to support first-year student success, we are continuously looking for ways to improve the experience we provide to new students. This statewide, one-day, drive-in conference provides a forum for faculty, staff, and administrators with an interest in first-year success to share ideas, resources, and strategies for improving the first-year experience on our campuses.

Who should attend?

Anyone on your campus with an interest in, or responsibility for first-year students, including:

  • Administrators with responsibility for student success and/or FYE
  • Access and Transition Programs staff
  • New Student Orientation staff
  • FYE faculty & staff
  • Faculty members who teach first-year courses
  • Academic advisors
  • Students considering careers in student affairs or higher education administration

Registration Information

Cost: Registration is $30 per person (includes parking permit, morning snacks, and lunch)

Registration Deadline: Monday, February 25, 2019

Cancellations: Refunds will be processed on a timely manner through March 1, 2019. If you have any questions please email Lisa Simmons, the FYE Consortium Chair, at before March 1, 2019.

Submit a Session Proposal

Our goal is to create an informative and engaging conference for anyone who works with incoming, first-year students across all levels and divisions of Utah. 

What we're looking for in proposals:

  • Presentations that give us relevant information we need to do our jobs 
  • Participant outcomes, and session type (e.g., general, roundtable, discussion)
  • Grounded in theory, practice, and/or research.
  • Support for practices, conclusions, or recommendations
  • A workshop outline comprising of approximately 45 minutes

What we're asking from you:

  • A clear objective/takeaway for attendees
  • A clear outline of how you plan to share your information  and engage the attendees in your presentation
  • No need to use formal lingo - sell us on why your program should be selected

How we will review submissions:

  • Presentations will be evaluated on content delivery and engagement    

All proposals are due by  5pm on Friday, February 1, 2019.
