The 2022 Utah First-Year Consortium "Innovations and Lessons Learned" is pleased to announce that Spencer P. Magleby will be this year's keynote speaker.
Dr. Magleby currently serves as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education, Director of the University Honor's Program and as a professor in Mechanical Engineering at Brigham Young University.
Dr. Magleby’s research has aimed at improving the processes and tools of engineering design and technology development with a focus on mechanical systems, compliant mechanisms, product design and collaboration. Dr. Magleby has over 20 patents and continues to push the boundaries of creativity, innovation, and imagination.
Recent work has explored the use of origami to inspire innovative product designs including origami bullet-proof shields for law enforcement, and lightweight origami designs for space satellites.
We look forward to learning more about how Dr. Magleby is using innovation and creativity to positively impact first-year students!
Practices and tools for innovation in engineering design can also provide powerful approaches for developing educational experiences that are adapted to changing environments, expectations, and resources. In this presentation Dr. Magleby introduces concepts of innovative design for a broad audience with examples from consumer products and his lab with a focus on inspiration from origami. We will take a peek at developing surgical instruments, deployable space telescopes and foldable furniture. Everyone will get a chance to think like an engineer and apply innovation approaches to opportunities and challenges in their own endeavors.
